The Department of Music Engineering aims to train all-around innovative talented people with the contemporary art and culture and modern scientific and cultural literacy, and able to actively adapt to the needs of social development in the digital age and master artistic creativity, technological application ability and engineering practice ability.

This department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. There are two undergraduate focuses, namely 1) Composition and Music Theory (Music Design and Production), and 2) Art and Technology. Postgraduate students can major in Electroacoustic Music Composition or Digital Music Intelligent Processing Technology for a master's degree.

The Music Design and Production focuses on applied music, film & television music and game music. It aims to train skilled personnel with strong abilities in music composition and production, advanced sound design concepts as well as innovative ideas and creativity for cross-sector integration. They have such courses as Music Design and Production, Analysis and Writing of Polyphonic Music, Orchestration and Electronic Music Arrangement, and Audio Synthesis. Students can serve in the industries of  film and television, animation, and game industries after graduation.

The Art and Technology, with a focus on artistic creativity, endeavors to help students become artists to master computer engineering skills and audio technologies. It aims at training talents for the game industry and the new media art exhibition and performance industry. It includes such courses as Basis of Engineering Mathematics, Electroacoustic Music Composition, Computer Music Programming, New Media Art and Design, Sound Installation Design, and Music and Artificial Intelligence. The department also adopts different talent training modes according to the actual situation. For example, it set up the main course of Recording Arts under the orientation of Music Design and Production with a view to training skilled personnel in music recording arts and digital audio technology.

The department possesses three teaching and research faculty teams: 1) music design and production, 2) music technology, and 3) recording arts. Among the 19 faculty members, there 2 two professors, 5 associate professors, 7 people with doctoral degrees, and 7 graduate supervisors. Currently, there have been 180 students on campus

By virtue of the excellent supports of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, the department is equipped with first-class teaching and research facilities, including recording studios, 60-track variable virtual sound field labs, mastering studios, anechoic chambers, new media exhibition and performance spaces, sound installation exhibition halls, media labs, 3D printing labs, teaching computer rooms, teaching studios, etc. These facilities provide excellent material support for faculty and students in teaching and research.

The Key Laboratory of Intelligent Processing Technology for Digital Music (sponsored by Ministry of Culture and Tourism) and the Digital Music (Zhejiang Province) Engineering Research Center serve as two major scientific research and experimental platforms for the department. The two high-level platforms facilitate the development in such fields as talent training, scientific research output and enterprise-university-research institution cooperation.
