The Pop Music Department is committed to ‘placing equal emphasis on performance and creation and balancing academics with practice’. It is characterized by ‘exploring the growth law of pop music talents and cultivating future-oriented excellent pop music talents’. Thus, it aims to explore an education model for cultivating high-quality music professionals and produce versatile music performance talents who can sing, dance, and perform well on the stage and create, orchestrate, and make good works off the stage.

 

The faculty have published multiple textbooks and completed 24 creation and performance projects. One project was approved by the China National Arts Fund.

 

In terms of discipline competition, the faculty have won awards at the provincial level or above 15 times. Zhang Meng, the pop singing teacher, won the gold award of Orchid Award (Pop Singing Group A) of the ‘Xin Song Project’ Young Singers Competition of Zhejiang; Wu Wenyi won the second place of Accordionist Group and "Meishi" Excellent Accordionist at the National ‘Meishi Cup’ (Chengdu) Accordion Competition. Students of the department won awards at many professional competitions at the university level or above for 220 times. Many of them won the first award at multiple important competitions such as the ‘Xin Song Project’ Young Singers Competition of Zhejiang, Zhejiang College Students Art Festival, and China Finals of Confédération Mondiale de l'Accordéon. One student was awarded the honorary title of "National Excellent Vocal Talent" by the Art Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

 

In terms of art practice, diverse concert brands such as 'amazing voice echoes' 'Ting' (meaning ‘listening'), and ‘Jiao Rong'(meaning 'integration') have been incubated for teachers; platforms have been built for students to provide stage practice opportunities of diverse types and at various levels; nearly 120 concerts of different kinds and more than 30 various academic forums and master classes have been held; the teachers and students have released more than 100 singles, two albums, and one vinyl record; two stages have been completed for the album Like created and sung by the students of the department; Ye Xuanqing, Xing Hanming, Shan Yichun, Li Fanyi, Zhang Endai, student group ‘Yin Zhi Jing (World of Voice)’ and other students from the department participated in and performed very well at many high-profile competition shows such as Sing! China by Zhejiang TV, The Coming One by Tencent Video, and Our Band by Mango TV. Zhang Endai, Gao Rui, Shan Yichun, Zhou Yulin, and other students participated in many popular TV shows such as Open The Door Down by CCTV, Universal Show by CCTV, Ace VS Ace by Zhejiang TV, Stage Boom by iQIYI, Our Song by Dragon TV, and King of Masked Singer (Season 4) by Jiangsu TV and also performed at many grand evening parties and concerts at the provincial level.

In terms of social services, Ye Xuanqing, Li Fanyi, Xing Hanming, and Shan Yichun were invited by the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee to participate in the activity of ‘Musical Asian Games: Resonate with XIZI — The First Selection of Musical Works for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022’; student Shan Yichun was selected as the Volunteer Image Ambassador for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022; teacher Pang Long created the song Burning as a work commissioned by the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee and the only alternative theme song of the 2022 Asian Games; Wen Yanjie and three other students were invited to perform at the 2022 Asian Games activities; the music video of Waiting for You, the song for volunteers created by teacher Wang Tao, was released globally.
