The Department of Piano of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music enjoys a profound history and effective reform in talent training, curriculum design and teaching methodology.
The department currently has 26 regular full-time teachers and four foreign teachers, including 3 professors and 8 associate professors. It has five teaching and research faculty teams: 1) majors, 2) minors, 3) art direction, 4) chamber music, and 5) art practice. Teachers have won important awards at competitions at home and abroad such as Géza Anda International Piano Competition, Piano Contest of Chinese Golden Bell Awards for Music, International Anton Rubinstein Competition for Piano, Hong Kong International Piano Competition, Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, Leeds International Piano Competition, China International Piano Competition, Shanghai International Piano Competition, and The Prime Golden Bell Music Award of China-Yangtze River Piano Competition. The full-time teachers have published over 100 papers and been awarded over 20 national and provincial prizes. Four national and nearly 30 provincial scientific research projects have been approved.
The Department of Piano offers four-year undergraduate and three-year postgraduate study programs, currently with 224 full-time undergraduate and 84 postgraduate students. Based on the features of the creation and performance-oriented disciplines, the department promotes discipline construction and carries out classified talent training. It follows the teaching principle of improving both performance skills and art qualities, values the integration of performance forms and theoretical learning, and encourages professional development with stage performance. It became the first department to use Ingkee and gives full play to Yamaha's distance learning systems for international communication and cooperation.
Over the past years, the department research team has made effective progress in the provincial project Innovative Piano Scores Series by Department of Piano, Zhejiang Conservatory of Music (I-IV) which was published by the Central Conservatory of Music Press. The team was awarded the honorary title of Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Innovation Team by Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture in 2017. Prof. Chen Sheng’gang and Associate Prof. Zhu Mei were awarded the title by Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture as Excellent Expert of Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture successively. The young piano teachers have held itinerant concerts in conservatories of music and grand theaters across the country for three consecutive years, which have obtained positive feedback among its counterparts. The young pianists had concerts at Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in 2019 and won rave reviews. Additionally, it sponsored 2019 Lang Lang International Piano Festival and 2020 Zhejiang Conservatory of Music Piano Festival and celebrated several high-quality solo, ensemble, and concerto concerts. Gradually, the department has built an outstanding teaching team.
The department boasts rich resources and a sound foundation for practical teaching. Relying on concerts and lectures for public benefits, the department improves students' professional skills and ability to serve the society. Students have won satisfying results at important contests, including Piano Contest of Chinese Golden Bell Awards for Music, the Prime Golden Bell Music Award of China-Yangtze River Piano Competition, Shanghai International Youth Piano Competition, and China International Music Competition.
